How to dance

I occasionally read about how “people don’t really dance at algoraves” and this is always a surprise to me. I even hear it about events that I often frequent myself, like AlgoRhythms not having “dance energy” and every time I hear it I’m surprised! or I hear about how certain events don’t have the right vibe or they feel “off” or something and I realised something: I never see these events myself because… Every event I go to.. I dance no matter what. So I think I’ve been experiencing a case of dance-energy survivorship bias.

And let me be absolutely clear: You do not need to dance. It is perfectly okay to not dance or to not want to dance. This blog post isn’t for you.

But for those of you wishing for more “dance energy” at events, this blog post is a piece of tough love directed directly at you.

Step 1: You must dance

Forget about other people. Do not point the finger at other people not dancing! Forget about them!!! You do not need them!! If you want “dance energy” at your event, the solution is NOT to get other people to dance. The solution is to DANCE!!!!!!

To create dance energy, do NOT get other people to dance.

To create dance energy, DANCE!

I put this to you: I don’t think you really want dance energy. If you wanted dance energy, you would dance.

I think this is the biggest thing I can tell you. Fix yourself first.

Step 2: Stand still

Stand in the middle of the room. Take up as much space as you can. Don’t hide at the corners or in between people.

You need to go onto the dancefloor to dance.

No one can see you dancing in the corner in the shadow. You need to be seen. Dancing is a physical thing for you. Dancing is about space. You need to take up space. DESTROY ALL SPACE. Dancing is a physical thing for you. It’s a visual thing for other people.

You can dance in secret at home or in the shower or in the corner of the club if you want. But if you are here to bring dance then BRING YOURSELF to the middle of the room.

[Just] stand in the middle of the room. Try it. Try standing in the middle of the room. Don’t do anything else. Do not do step 3 until you have done this.

Step 3: Move

Move any part of your body in any way you want. It does not need to be in time to the music.

Nod your your head. Wiggle you foot. Twist your waist. Run. Spin. Wave your hands high in the air. Wobble your shoulders. It doesn’t fucking matter

Step 4: Do not stop moving

Don’t do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP GOING. Get yourself tired.

Okay that’s it! easy

now I’ll cover some common excuses

Common excuses

remember, you don’t have to dance! if you don’t want to dance, then don’t dance!!! but if you want to dance, then these common excuses don’t cut it

“The music isn’t danceable”

Bullshit. Everything is danceable just fucking watch me. That’s a you problem, not the music’s fault. The 4 steps don’t change based on the music. You do the same things no matter what

“I’m tired”

Ridiculous. You can nod your head the tiniest amount and it’s still dancing

“I’m shy”

Normalise sharing scrappy fiddles

“The music stopped”

Then sing a song! Or imagine one in your head! Or RUN or WALK

“I don’t want to take the space from someone else”

By dancing, you are not taking, you are giving
